Utility Laborer
We Energies, a subsidiary of WEC Energy Group, is seeking Utility Laborers in our Metro Milwaukee Area. This position is represented by our We Energies L2006 Union.
Job Summary
Performs and assists other Field Operations personnel in all aspects of the operation, maintenance, construction, installation and documentation of the utility’s natural gas distribution system.
Job Responsibilities
- Installation and testing of meters.
- Work at regulation stations.
- Determining locations of company facilities based on GIS records.
- Spotting of employees while moving vehicle equipment.
- Hand digging.
- Backfilling of excavations.
- Installation of erosion control measures.
- Cutting and threading steel pipe.
- Preparation and inspection of material for installation.
- Securement of areas with cation tape, barricades, cones, flashers, plywood, fencing, etc.
- Leak testing with soap. Inside and Outside Leak investigations including appliance safety inspections.
- Emergency Response.
- Independently perform maintenance and preparatory tasks in support of field operations work.
- Painting of company and customer piping/equipment.
- Fabrication of threading and bolted piping assemblies.
- Material stocking of supplies for in-field use.
- CDL Training and Practice.
- Operation of hand, power, and pneumatic tools.
- Select and complete door hangers for customer communication.
- Cleaning of tools and equipment Valve box painting and maintenance.
- Identification of corrosion
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma, HSED, or GED is required
- Applicant must have a valid driver’s license and meet the company’s requirements for driving.
- The selected applicant must obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL) within 90 days of entry into the job
- The applicant must comply with DOT Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) drug and alcohol testing requirements
- Reading, mechanical aptitude and math skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of properties of natural gas
- Knowledge of safety rules and PPE requirements
- Critical abilities include situational awareness, problem solving, decision making, prioritizing work objectives, communication skills, dealing with irate customers, physical strength and manual dexterity, mental stamina, adaptability to extreme weather and working conditions
- Working knowledge of fire training, confined spaces, meter reading, construction and repair standards and emergency response procedures
- Obtain/maintain all Operator Qualifications (OQ) and required training for this position
- Skilled in the operation of tools and equipment necessary to perform the essential function and meet the OQ requirements of the occupation
- Other important requirements include computer literacy, construction print and map

Minimum Posting Range: $30.63
Maximum Posting Range: $33.47
The pay range reflects the minimum and maximum for the position at the time of posting and may be modified in the future. The starting salary/pay within the pay range will be based on several factors, as applicable, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, geographic location, shift, travel requirements, collective bargaining agreements, and business and organizational needs. At WEC Energy Group, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range for their role.
